[HOW TO] RNS-510 Navigation & Firmware Update

This is a tutorial on how to update the firmware version and Map version on RNS-510 systems.

Prerequisites -

  • Make sure you have a strong battery, if the car battery is weak connect a car battery charger to the car.
  • Switch off the headlights, seat heating and climate control system.
  • Remove all SD Cards/CD’s/DVD’s from the system before beginning.
  • Do not remove the CD or DVD from the system during the update.
  • Software can ONLY be updated on units that are currently running below SW-Version 5238.
  • Read the complete guide before you start.

You can check your current software version by holding down the “Setup” button for 10 seconds and then selecting “Version info” onscreen. If you cannot view the version information this means you are running SW-Version older than 5238 and you may proceed with the SW-Version update.

Updating the SW-Version -

  1. Open the car and turn on the navigation system by pressing down on the power knob once. Do not put the keys into the ignition.
  2. Insert the software update disc into the navigation system.
  3. It will cycle through a few checks, the screen will go black and then you will be presented with a “software loading version” screen that tells you about the software update and asks you to press OK or Cancel.
  4. Press OK. You will then be presented with a “software loading disclaimer” screen saying the firmware will be updated are you sure.
  5. Press OK again. This process can take around 2-3mins.
  6. The system will now update. This process takes around 50 minutes and the status will be displayed on screen as it updates each section.

Updating the Map version HDD -

  1. Please remove the firmware update DVD from the car.
  2. Insert the key into the ignition and turn the ignition on.
  3. If you do not have a battery charger connected please start the car to avoid battery drain.
  4. Wait a few minutes for the navigation system to initialise and Insert the navigation update DVD.
  5. After a few minutes, you will be presented with a screen that states “New navigation DVD”.
  6. Press Continue.
  7. You will now be presented with a screen that asks if you want to save the database.
  8. Press Save.
  9. The navigation will now begin updating in the background. To check on the progress, press the eject button.
  10. You may use the car as normal during this update, it will simply continue where it left off when the car is switched off/on.

Please note that it may be necessary to take the car for a short drive post install to calibrate the navigation system

Optionally, if you would like to add the latest speed camera database to your system, please see here.

  • Maps Installation
Maps are supplied in DVD Double Layer, and my experience, from last pair of months reading all over the internet, is – Not all RNS510 are able to read this media format. For exemple, my own.
So, when your RNS510, reject the Maps DVD, forget cleaning, copy to other media …,you must start the process of installation from SD. There are tools for job.

  • Hi,
My RS510, currently run the version 6270, Hardware-Version H21, according your description (Software can ONLY be updated on units that are currently running below SW-Version 5238.), I can’t use the DVD with the 6276, for updating my system. This is a correct interpretation of your advise?

  • Hi Ibraheem,
Many thanks for the RNS510 2019 upgrade set.

I was very dubious about esercise this on a number of levels, including the various problems I noted from other RNS510 users that had had problems updation their systems, and also in respect of the fact your company was only recently registered, and with an 18 year old as Director. I needn’t have worried need I?

The set was received the day I expected it, in good order.

Initially I decided not to upgrade the firmware, as I was told that my system, SW version 4024, wouldn’t need updating, and as a bit of an IT pro from the late 1960s with some experience of firmware upgrades bricking systems, and not seeing a need to take the risk, just went straight to the maps disc.

It didn’t work. Plent of clicking and whirring, but nothing to indicate the system had found a disc it could deal with. Perhaps a dirty head I though, so try a music cd – it worked, so not a totally useles head then.

I then desided to try the firmware disc, and it worked read OK and after the messages, aborted and tried the maps again – still nothing.

So, back to the firmware disc, crossed fingers and went for the update. It worked with no problems, apart from several clcks, whirs, restarts.

Put back the maps cd and it now read OK and installed without a problem.

So it would appear that my SW version did indeed need updating to be able to update the maps from the cd.

    Many thanks for the set.

  • Hi I bought the sat nav and firmware 2disc set. The firmware I had on mine was higher than that on the disc but I am not concerned as I only needed the sat nav update. I wonder though do you know of a way to enable the video while moving part of my version which is 6270
