[HOW TO] Audi MMI 3G+, 3G Plus Navigation & Firmware Update

This is a tutorial on how to update the media version and navigation database version on Audi MMI 3G Plus systems.

Prerequisites -

  • Connect your car with a battery charger OR leave the engine running during the update procedure.
  • Switch off the headlights, seat heating and climate control system.
  • Remove all SD Cards/CD’s/DVD’s from the MMI system before beginning.
  • Turn the ignition on, and let the MMI system initialise for 1-2 minutes before beginning.
  • Do not remove the SD card or DVD from the MMI system during the update.
  • If your current firmware version is "HN+_DAB_K0097" it does not need to be updated. You can skip the media version upgrade instructions.
  • If your current firmware version is below “HN+_EU_AU3G_K0942_3” or "HN+R_EU_AU_K0942_4" it must be updated.
  • Read the complete guide before you start.

WARNING: DO NOT use update files downloaded off the internet, Audi updates MUST be modified depending on the equipment fitted to the car. You will lose all audio if an incorrect update is applied to the car. All of our update packages are tailored to your car specifically to prevent any chance of failure.

  10. Once the update is complete, a “Device Summary” screen will appear. Scroll down to the bottom and select “Continue”.
  11. Select “Cancel Documentation”. The system will reboot one final time. The update is now complete.

  • Ordered the upgrade for my 2015 Audi MMI 3G+ and received all the material about a week later, well packaged. Thought long and hard if I wanted to risk doing this myself, as I am of a “certain age” and technology really scares me (lol). Printed off the instructions / tutorial and read through a number of times and decided to take the plunge. It genuinely was really straight forwards, attached a battery charger and followed the instructions. Disc with updated media version loaded pretty much seamlessly and took about 45 mins I think. Left it running and went back to see if had completed itself. Next put the SD card with nav database, this took about 75 – 90 mins to do its stuff. At the end, went back into seting menu to check it had upgraded but there was nothing listed, it was blank … mild panic set in!!! So left it for about an hour as it stated, went back and checked again and bingo, it was displaying the correct version … phew.
Finally inserted the SD card for activation of nav database, this seemed to load in seconds and hey presto … all done. Took the car for a short drive a few juctions of the nearby motorway and all seems good. Thanks for the material and I can honestly say, it really is a doodle to do, so no real dramas … TH

  • Genuine response. Had a few problems at first but this eventually got resolved by Aaron he had to resend the cds and maps. Everything works perfect now thanks a lot and. And it does actually take 3 hours to install you have to be very patient very but follow instructions and you’ll be fine

  • As others have mentioned, I encountered errors in the firmware/mmi upgrade whilst updating speech recognition language packs. I messaged Aron who responded very quickly, and advised me to try again. So remember to keep popping back to your car so you don’t lose too much time. Some needed retrying up to 3 times, but eventually everything updated fine. Mine was a 62 reg so my updates took almost 5 hours!!!. I had a battery charger attached. Nav software update went a bit quicker and smoother, taking roughly an hour and a half. I also had to power off and leave for an hour for the nav version to update onto the mmi. Actual activation was literally a 15 second job. Overall I am very pleased. Do not underestimate the time this will take.
