[HOW TO] Audi MMI 3G+, 3G Plus Navigation & Firmware Update

This is a tutorial on how to update the media version and navigation database version on Audi MMI 3G Plus systems.

Prerequisites -

  • Connect your car with a battery charger OR leave the engine running during the update procedure.
  • Switch off the headlights, seat heating and climate control system.
  • Remove all SD Cards/CD’s/DVD’s from the MMI system before beginning.
  • Turn the ignition on, and let the MMI system initialise for 1-2 minutes before beginning.
  • Do not remove the SD card or DVD from the MMI system during the update.
  • If your current firmware version is "HN+_DAB_K0097" it does not need to be updated. You can skip the media version upgrade instructions.
  • If your current firmware version is below “HN+_EU_AU3G_K0942_3” or "HN+R_EU_AU_K0942_4" it must be updated.
  • Read the complete guide before you start.

WARNING: DO NOT use update files downloaded off the internet, Audi updates MUST be modified depending on the equipment fitted to the car. You will lose all audio if an incorrect update is applied to the car. All of our update packages are tailored to your car specifically to prevent any chance of failure.

  9. After several minutes/hours (it depends on what needs to be updated) the firmware update will be completed. The system may reboot several times. Once the system reboots, the MMI will display the update progress of various devices. This is carried out automatically and does not require you to take any action.
  10. Once the update is complete, a “Device Summary” screen will appear. Scroll down to the bottom and select “Continue”.
  11. Select “Cancel Documentation”. The system will reboot one final time. The update is now complete.
  12. In order to proceed in updating the map database, it must be confirmed that the firmware has been updated successfully to the latest version. To verify this please allow the MMI system to initialise for 5 minutes. Now go into “Setup MMI”, scroll down to the bottom and select “Version information”. The Media version should now be “HN+_EU_AU3G_K0942_3” or "HN+R_EU_AU_K0942_4".

Please note that it may be necessary to take the car for a short drive post install to calibrate the navigation system

  • As others have mentioned, I encountered errors in the firmware/mmi upgrade whilst updating speech recognition language packs. I messaged Aron who responded very quickly, and advised me to try again. So remember to keep popping back to your car so you don’t lose too much time. Some needed retrying up to 3 times, but eventually everything updated fine. Mine was a 62 reg so my updates took almost 5 hours!!!. I had a battery charger attached. Nav software update went a bit quicker and smoother, taking roughly an hour and a half. I also had to power off and leave for an hour for the nav version to update onto the mmi. Actual activation was literally a 15 second job. Overall I am very pleased. Do not underestimate the time this will take.

  • Just updated my Audi Q5. Worked as advertised. Had to go for a short ride before the system. Would allow the navigation to compute the route. Took about 3 hours in total. The CZ language halted, I selected retry and the it worked. At the end, the activation didn’t work at first. I repeated it and got the Success screen! Great update!

  • Hi. I bought new firmware and nav updates online (not from you, but I might be doing that soon). Firmware installed easily, but MMI says “install updates,” then immediately goes to “no updates found,” or something similar. Also media stuck on initializing. And “car plus menu” doesn’t bring up green screen to delete old maps. Any help is much appreciated.
