[HOW TO] Audi MMI 2G High Firmware Update

This is a tutorial on how to update the firmware version and bluetooth on Audi MMI 2G High systems.

The firmware updates generally include bug fixes, performance enhancements, bluetooth compatibility fixes, Audi Music Interface compatibility fixes, new road map addition capabilities and improved sensitivity of rain / light sensors. The complete change-log can be viewed at the end of this post.

You can check your current software version by going into Car -> Setup -> Version Information. The first 4 digits on the SW line depict the software version.

The latest available firmware version for the Audi MMI 2G High system is as follows;

  • SW: AU-HU 55.7.0 0835

WARNING: DO NOT use firmware update files downloaded off the internet, Audi firmware updates MUST be modified depending on the equipment fitted to the car. You will lose all audio if an incorrect firmware update is applied to the car. We are able to supply the firmware update package tailored to your car. Please see here - Audi MMI 2G High Firmware Update 55.7.0 8K0998961/4L0998961

Prerequisites -

  • Connect your car with a battery charger OR leave the engine running during the update procedure.
  • Switch off the headlights, seat heating and climate control system to prevent battery drain.
  • Remove all CD’s/DVD’s from the MMI system before beginning.
  • Start the car, and let the MMI system initialise for 1-2 minutes before beginning.
  • Do not remove the CD from the MMI system during the update.
  • Read the complete guide before you start.
  • If your firmware version is below 51.5.0, you MUST update using disc "K9XX" first and then run update "K1XXX" if necessary to reach version 55.7.0.
  • If your car is equipped with bluetooth, the bluetooth update procedure MUST be carried out twice as it will wipe the bluetooth firmware first, and install the updated bluetooth firmware second.
  • It is recommended to reach firmware version 55.7.0 before attempting to update the bluetooth firmware.

Updating the Software Version -

  1. Enter the "Current Config." menu by pressing the SETUP button and immediately after that the RETURN button. Hold both buttons down for a few seconds.
  2. Insert the firmware update disc into the CD changer in the glovebox and wait 2 minutes.
  3. Select the “SWUpdate” option on the MMI by pressing the bottom right selection button around the central control knob.
  4. Select “CD-ROM” as the source by pressing down on the central control knob.
  5. Select “Standard”.
  6. You will see a list with all the categories that the firmware will update. Scroll down to the bottom and select “Start download”.
  7. You will see a warning message that tells you not to use any electrical devices during the update procedure. Scroll down to the bottom and select "OK".
  8. After several minutes/hours (it depends on what needs to be updated) the firmware update will be completed. The system may reboot several times. Once the system reboots, the MMI will display the update progress of various devices. This is carried out automatically and does not require you to take any action.
  9. Once the update is complete, a “Standard” screen will appear. Scroll down to the bottom and select “Restart MMI”.

  • Hi,
could you please explain what’s the difference between “K9XX” and “K1XXX” ?
    Thank you

  • Hi,
I have a 2008 A4 Avant with the factory software, I suppose. Bluetooth only works for phone calls. Would this add support for playing media through the built in Bluetooth?
    Thanks

    Bogdan
